Your Guide to Silicone - Lubes & Toys!

If you have any experience of sex toys, you will either have heard of silicone, or you may even have used it already. But really, what is silicone all about?

In the world of sex toys, silicone rubber is used to make many vibrators, dildos and other bedroom novelties. Silicone is also a base for the longer lasting lubricants on the market.

Silicone rubber, used for sex toys, is a mixture of silicon, the chemical element (symbol Si & atomic #14), as well as various gases and heat treatments in order for the rubberising process to occur.

Silicone is also very different from latex (rubber), which can be either synthetic or natural. I will cover latex, it's history, uses and fun products in a future post.



The material of choice for soft, body comfortable sex toys, silicone rubber is durable and easy to clean.

You may notice on many toy descriptions the statement that it is 'free from phthalates'. These are chemicals that are thought to have carcinogenic (cancer causing)  and mutating effects on the skin and parts of the body. Not so good for any product used on humans, never mind in an intimate manner! Being free from these is a very good thing.

Remember, though, that only water based lubricants are suitable for use with your silicone (or the cheaper jelly variations) sex toys. The Journey to a Self Made Orgasm

My Strap On Harnesses & Dildos

I wanted to write a blog post about the strap on harnesses I have and the dildos I use with them. I own three strap on harnesses:

• Vac U Lock Lucid Dream No 9
• Sharon Sloane Latex Double G Pleasure Briefs

Firstly, we will cover the Sedeux. The Sedeux Harness comes with three size O rings, which any flare base or harness compatible dildo (or vibrator) will fit into.

The sizes of the rings are: 1.5", 1.75" and 2". These are the perfect range of sizes to fit most dildos I've come across.

If I did require any more/replacement O rings, the Sportsheets O-Ring Set of 4 is a good price and also includes the smaller 1.25" ring - useful for teeny beginner toys! 

I like my Sedeux Harness because it is very versatile, fitting a waist anywhere between my 26 inches and up to a maximum of 68 inches. So I'm ok for the ice-cream party! The leg straps will fit between 14 up to 34 inches circumference. I'm loath to say it will fit any woman... but you can see how adaptable this item really is!

The front panel is sweetly padded and has a very tactile velvety surface. Down the centre of this pad is a secret pocket, inside which you may wish to place the accompanying bullet that comes with the Sedeux Harness. The easily adjustable buckle style straps around your legs mean that you have full motion available to your legs, as they are attached to each one separately, not binding them together. So that's the Sedeux Harness and my collection of accompanying bullets and dildos covered.

The Vac U Lock Lucid Dream No 9 Harness comprises the world famous Doc Johnson Vac U Lock Harness system and a special G Spot Dildo attachment.

You have the option of purchasing the standard Vac U Lock Ultra Harness if you wish for the harness without the specialised G Spot attachment.

Any Vac U Lock compatible dildo will fit on to this vacuum sealed plug system. The system works incredibly well, a simple pop on and pop off release mechanism which I find to be even more secure than the Sedeux.

You may wish to ease the fitting of dildos to the plug by means of this powder. Replacement plugs can be bought in time and there are even special double ended plugs so that you can enjoy being filled from the other side of the same attachment, in much the same way as my much loved Doc Johnson Junior Double Dildo 12 Inch fills and thrills both my partner and I.

At the moment, the only two dildos I have which fit my wonderful Vac U Lock are the pink G Spot attachment in the box it came with, and I bought the more realistic and entirely thrilling Classic 8 inch Dong.

Due to the open crotch design of the harness, you are again able to combine your strap on session with both vaginal and anal play, and the harness itself is very easy to both fit and use. To quote a playmate, its like 'having [your] very own cock!'

The Sharon Sloane Latex Double G Pleasure Briefs aren't strictly speaking a strap on I guess, as they are an all in one moulded and fashioned panty that has an internal dildo (5 inches) and an external one to use on and in your partner (7 inches) without the option of exchanging these.

Having said that, the price is very agreeable and perfect for those strap on newbies or anyone unsure if strap on play is for them. These briefs are easy to wear and come in a small, medium or large size, which I would advise would be to fit a maximum of a UK 16.

The stretchy latex is ideal for a gentler type of play and the soft spongy texture of the dildos make for a tender experience rather than a rigid and rugged session.

Be aware that latex does tear with frequent stretching and/or rough use so these are not likely to be as long lasting an invesment as the Sedeux or Vac U Lock!

I like to combine some role play with my strap on, fitting condoms to the dildos and suchlike. For anal play this also has the dual purpose of keeping the toys as clean as possible which is always a plus!

Make sure you have some good lubes to hand, I personally love the Durex Play Feel, the Sliquid Organics Natural Warming Lubricant, or Liquid Silk. A water based lubricant is always a good idea to avoid any damage to your silicone or latex toys, plus avoiding any skin irritations for those more sensitive types.
